I've taught Japanese online for six years: 7,000+ lessons, 700+ students from all over the world. I've been a learner myself too, working through English, Spanish, French, and Mandarin.
Seven thousand lessons is a lot of chances to watch what actually happens to learners. The students who made it weren't the most disciplined or the most talented. They were the ones who got into real Japanese early, in small doses they could keep up, and stayed in it. Everything I've built here comes from that observation.
What I believe about learning
A language isn't a set of rules: it's sound and intention, paired, until the pair feels like yours. Rules are useful exactly once: as a shortcut at the beginning. So take the shortcut. Learn the essential patterns fast, then get into real Japanese (listen, understand, imitate, absorb) with input you can actually follow.
The three things I care about most are context, nuance, and connection. Not rules for their own sake. The moment a sentence lands in a real situation and you feel what it means — that's where a language starts becoming yours.
And one thing I tell every student: you belong in the language before you understand all of it. Learning happens because you stay in the room while things are still fuzzy, not after everything becomes clear.
What Janai School is
It's the thing I kept wishing existed, for my students and for myself. The patterns, the comprehensible input, the focused practice: usually scattered across a handful of apps and a bookshelf, here arranged into one clear path. You never have to wonder what to do next.
My role in it is simple. I'm not here to lecture from the front of the room. I'm here to run alongside you, to know the way, hand you what you need when you need it, and notice when you show up.
Why “Janai”?
じゃない(janai) means “not.” So Janai School is, on purpose, not a school. No textbook to grind through, no exam to cram for, no classroom to sit quietly in. What there is: real Japanese, and a way of learning it that actually sticks, and a place to share the journey and the fun beyond it, together. A school that isn't one: that's the whole idea.
